Texas Window Tint Laws 2026: What's Legal in Houston (and What Actually Beats the Heat)

The Short Version (Texas VLT Limits)

Visible Light Transmission (VLT) is the percentage of light a window lets through. Lower number = darker tint. Texas has different VLT minimums depending on the window and vehicle type.

Sedans (passenger cars)

• Windshield: Non-reflective tint allowed only above the AS-1 line (typically the top 5 inches).
• Front side windows: 25% VLT or lighter (so 25%, 35%, 50%, 70% — all legal).
• Rear side windows: Any darkness.
• Rear windshield: Any darkness.

SUVs, trucks, and vans

• Windshield: Same AS-1 line rule.
• Front side windows: Still 25% VLT minimum.
• Behind the driver: Any darkness, including limo tint.

The AS-1 Line Confuses Everyone

Look at the inside of your windshield where it meets the dash. About 5 inches down from the top, you'll see "AS-1" etched in the glass. That's the limit. Tint is legal above it — typically a strip you can use as a sun visor. Tinting below it is illegal in Texas, with one exception.

If you have a written medical exemption from a Texas-licensed physician (skin condition, lupus, photophobia), you can apply tint below the AS-1 line. You must keep the signed exemption form in the vehicle.

Reflectivity and Color Limits

Texas also caps reflectivity at 25%. That means no full mirror tint, no extreme metallic films. Red, amber, and blue tint shades are prohibited on passenger windows. Stick to neutral charcoal or gray-bronze and you're safe.

Why 35% Still Cooks Your Dash in Houston

Here's where most Houston drivers get burned (literally). VLT only measures visible light. It tells you how dark the window looks. It does not tell you how much heat the film blocks.

Heat is mostly infrared. A cheap dyed 5% limo tint can look blackout-dark but block almost no infrared. A premium ceramic film at 35% — perfectly legal for front sides — can reject 50–70% of total solar energy because of its IR-blocking layer.

That's why we push ceramic film over dyed film for Houston. You get legal light levels with real heat rejection, and the film doesn't fade to purple in three summers.

Enforcement: What Actually Happens

Houston PD and DPS troopers carry a small handheld meter that measures VLT through the glass and film together. If you're stopped and the front sides read below 25%, it's a Class C misdemeanor — usually a citation in the $100–$275 range with a mandatory removal or correction.

Most stops are added to another reason — a traffic violation, expired plates. We rarely see drivers pulled over for tint alone in Houston, but a darker-than-legal install absolutely shows up at inspection time. Texas state inspection now includes a tint compliance check.

Common Mistakes We See

• Pre-tinted "privacy glass" plus aftermarket film: The combined VLT goes well below legal. Trucks and SUVs already have factory privacy on the rear; only tint behind the driver, not the fronts.
• Trusting the box, not the measurement: "35% film" applied to factory-tinted glass that already lets through 70% becomes a 25% combined VLT. Measure the actual install, not the film alone.
• Bargain shops with no warranty: If the film bubbles, purples, or peels in 18 months, you pay twice. A 3M warranty means free re-do, no questions.
