EVs aren't like regular cars when it comes to paint and glass protection. Thinner factory paint, signal-sensitive radar and camera arrays around the glass, big panoramic roofs that bake the cabin, and battery packs that hate sitting in 140°F parking lots. If you bought a Tesla in Houston (or a Rivian, Lucid, Mach-E, Ioniq, EV6), here's what actually matters before you book any protection.
The Tesla Paint Problem
Tesla's factory paint is famously thin — measurements typically come in at 90–120 microns total, vs 130–150 on most German cars. That's not enough buffer against Houston's combination of highway debris, baked-on bug acid, and aggressive automatic washes.
On a Model 3 or Model Y, the leading edges of the front fender and hood start showing rock chips within the first 5,000 miles for most owners. By 30k miles, the entire front bumper is peppered.
The fix is the same as on any car — but more urgent. Front PPF (paint protection film) before you start racking up freeway miles. The film absorbs every chip; your paint stays mint underneath.
What About Radar and Sensor Areas?
Modern EVs have radar transceivers behind the front bumper (Tesla front radar where equipped), ultrasonic sensors on bumper corners, and a forward-facing camera cluster behind the windshield. PPF over these is fine — the film is engineered to pass radar and visible/IR camera signals. Ceramic coating is also fine.
What's NOT fine: metallic window tint anywhere near the cellular antennas in the rear glass area. Metallic films can attenuate the LTE signal your car uses to talk to the mothership.
This is why we only install non-metallic ceramic film on EVs — 3M's ceramic IR series uses nano-ceramic particles for heat rejection without any metal layer.
The Cabin Heat Issue (Bigger on EVs)
Two things make EVs heat-sensitive in ways gas cars aren't:
- Battery longevity: Lithium-ion packs degrade faster when they sit at 95–110°F for hours. Cabin heat soaks the battery in shopping center parking lots.
- Range loss to AC: Pre-cooling a 130°F cabin to 72°F can eat 4–8% of your battery before you've moved. Cooler cabin = more range.
A premium ceramic tint at 35% VLT on front sides + 20% rear with full panoramic-roof tint can drop peak cabin temperature 15–25°F vs untinted glass. For a Tesla Model Y in Houston, that pays for itself in battery health alone over 5 years.
The Panoramic Roof Is the Killer
The glass roof on a Tesla, Polestar, or Lucid is gorgeous — and a thermal nightmare in Houston. Even with the OEM "UV-tinted" glass, the cabin under that roof bakes.
Two options:
- Ceramic tint on the roof: A clear-look (70% VLT) ceramic IR film keeps the open-air feel but blocks 60%+ of infrared. Best of both.
- Darker roof tint (20–35%): Cooler still, but you lose some of the panoramic effect.
Roof tint on a panoramic roof is the single biggest cabin-temperature improvement we install on Teslas. Most owners want the clear-IR option for the look.
Charging-Port and Front-End PPF Coverage
For Teslas specifically, the panels we recommend covering with PPF:
- Front bumper (full)
- Hood (full or 24" partial)
- Fender tops (full)
- Mirror caps (full)
- Rocker panels and door cups
- Charging port door (gets hand-touched constantly)
- Headlights (UV haze on EVs is fast)
Optional: rear bumper edge — gets scuffed by groceries, kids' backpacks, and the hatch closing on luggage.
Ceramic Coating on Top — Yes
A multi-year ceramic coating on top of PPF and bare paint does three things for EV owners:
- Beads water (so the auto-wipe-down at Supercharger stalls works better)
- Resists chemical staining from EV-fluid runoff (less common but real)
- Adds depth to the paint, especially metallic Tesla colors like Midnight Cherry Red and Stealth Grey
Apply ceramic AFTER PPF, never before. Order matters.
Tesla "Wrap to Match" Trick
Some owners wrap the Tesla emblems, Turbine alloy accents, or the chrome delete in matte black vinyl while we do PPF. We can do both in the same visit — the climate-controlled bay handles wrap, PPF, and ceramic in one workflow.
What Tesla Service Centers Don't Tell You
Tesla's mobile service is excellent for mechanical work but can't address paint protection. Their detail offerings are limited. The aftermarket — done by a real shop, not a mobile detailer with a folding canopy — is the right path.
Also worth knowing: warranty repair on Tesla paint is hard to claim and rarely covers chip or environmental damage. PPF prevents the claim conversation entirely.

- Window tint: 3M Ceramic IR 35% front sides, 20% rear sides + rear glass, clear-IR (70%) on the panoramic roof
- PPF: 3M Pro Series front package (bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors, headlights, rocker panels)
- Ceramic coating: 5-year package over the PPF and bare paint
The whole stack on a Model Y typically runs $4,500–$6,500 depending on PPF coverage. For a $60k vehicle you'll keep 5+ years in Houston heat, that's the right move.
Why Houston-Specific Matters
Texas-coast weather (UV, heat, humidity, bug acid, salt air on coastal trips) is harder on a vehicle than any other major US metro. EV-specific stack from a 3M Authorized shop that knows Teslas inside-out beats a generic "we tint everything" approach.
