8 Questions to Ask Before You Tint Your Car in Houston

Every Houston tint shop will tell you they do "the best work in town." Some are right. Most are repeating a script. These eight questions cut through the marketing and tell you exactly what kind of shop you're standing in.

1. "Are you a 3M Authorized Dealer, and can I see the certificate?"

3M only authorizes shops that meet training and install-quality standards. Authorized installers get genuine 3M film with the manufacturer warranty attached — a film bought through any other channel doesn't carry that warranty, no matter what the wrapper says.

If they say "we use 3M-equivalent" or hesitate, walk out. There's no such thing as 3M-equivalent.

2. "Is the film ceramic or dyed?"

Dyed film is cheap. It looks dark on day one and fades to purple within 2–4 Houston summers. It also blocks almost no infrared heat — the thing you actually want a film to do.

Ceramic film costs more up front because of the nano-ceramic layer that blocks IR without using metal. It stays color-stable for the life of the car and rejects 50–70% of total solar energy, even at lighter, legal shades.

3. "What VLT will my front windows read after installation?"

Texas law caps front side windows at 25% VLT. That's combined film + glass, not just film. A "35% film" applied over factory-tinted glass that already lets through 70% becomes around 25% combined.

A pro shop will measure your existing glass with a meter, calculate the combined number, and show you the math before you commit. If they shrug and tell you "it'll be fine," they're guessing.

4. "How long is the warranty, and what does it cover?"

3M backs ceramic film for the life of the vehicle, transferable to the next owner. The warranty covers bubbling, peeling, cracking, color change, and adhesive failure.

What it does NOT cover: damage you cause yourself (rolling down a window too soon after install, abrasive cleaners, etc.). Ask for the warranty in writing, not "yeah, we stand behind our work."

5. "Do you cut on the car or computer-cut to my specific vehicle?"

Cheap shops cut film by hand with a razor blade against your glass. One slip and they've nicked your paint, your weather seal, or your defroster lines. Every cut on your car is a permanent risk.

Computer-cut shops feed your year/make/model into a plotter that cuts the film on a separate mat with millimeter precision. No blades touch your vehicle. Edges are clean and the film tucks into the gasket the way the factory glass does.

6. "What's the cure time, and what should I do for the first week?"

Window film needs 3–7 days for the adhesive to fully cure (longer in winter, shorter in Houston summer). During that period:

  • Don't roll windows down for at least 72 hours.
  • Expect a slight haze or water bubbles — they evaporate as the film cures.
  • Don't wipe the film for the first week.
  • Use only mild soapy water or ammonia-free cleaner long-term.

A shop that doesn't volunteer cure-time instructions hasn't installed enough cars to know they matter.

7. "Where will my car be while it's being tinted?"

Window film install requires a clean, climate-controlled environment. Dust, hair, and direct sun cause permanent contamination under the film. If a shop installs in a dusty open bay or a driveway, you'll see the dust forever.

Ask to see the install bay before you book. Closed, climate-controlled, well-lit. That's the bar.

8. "Can I see recent installs and online reviews?"

Reviews on Google and the shop's own gallery should match. If a shop has 50+ reviews averaging 4.8+ stars and a gallery of work that matches the vehicles they say they install, you're in the right place.

If they're new, photo evidence of installer experience and 3M training is your fallback. Vague answers here are a yellow flag.

Quick Decision Filter

If a shop can answer all eight of these without hesitation and shows you the measurements, the warranty, and the install bay, you're at the right place. If three or more answers feel like dodges, keep looking.
